The conservative lawmakers helped Republicans win control of the House in last November's elections. On the campaign trail, they pledged to cut government spending, lower the nation's debt and fight moves to raise taxes. The recent battle over raising the debt limit fit right into their playbook, experts say. "We have not forgotten that we were sent here to cut spending, and I think leadership was listening to us," said DesJarlais, of South Pittsburg. "That brought a private-sector perspective that Washington's not used to," he said. "In the private sector, in individual families and homes, you know what it's like to balance a budget and live within your means."
