Fleischmann, DesJarlais Vote Against Debt Limit Increase
Reps. Chuck Fleischmann and Scott DesJarlais voted no on H.R. 1954, a bill to raise the federal government's legal debt limit by $2.4 trillion "without making a single spending cut." The vote was 97 in favor and 318 against raising the debt limit by $2.4 trillion. Rep. Fleischmann said, "The answer to maxing out one credit card is not to max out another. That is why I voted against the bill tonight that would have raised the debt ceiling without making significant spending cuts and budget reforms.Rep. DesJarlais said, "This vote comes as a response to the demands from the Obama administration and 110+ House Democrats to quickly consider a 'clean' debt limit bill. "I voted to reject this blank check debt limit increase. As I travel throughout Tennessee's Fourth Congressional District, the thing that I hear most frequently from my constituents is that they want Washington to stop spending money that our nation doesn't have.President Obama and Congressional Democrats need to come to the realization that in order for our economy to grow and create jobs, government must learn to live within its fiscal means. Saddling our children and grandchildren with a mountain of debt to pay for reckless spending is an irresponsible fiscal policy and one that I will continue to oppose. I am voting against this bill because my constituents want Washington to get serious about addressing our country's debt crisis
