On January 7, 2014, the United States House of Representatives gaveled in the second session of the 113th Congress.

Representative Scott DesJarlais, M.D. (TN-04) released the following statement:

“As we prepare to embark upon a new legislative session, I hope my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will keep in mind one simple fact: we serve the American public. And what the American people deserve is nothing less than an efficient, functional government that lives within the constitutional parameters this country was founded upon. They are owed a government that creates opportunities for those who dare to achieve, not one that feeds off the success of others.

“Throughout this next year, we should keep in mind that the hot button issues being debated inside the beltway are not always the ones being discussed at the kitchen table. That is why Congress must listen to the people we represent and we must never lose sight of what truly matters to hardworking families.

“Unfortunately, our president possesses a radical view that jeopardizes the very future of this great nation. House conservatives have held the line in preventing his far-left ideology from becoming a reality. While I certainly hope 2014 provides more bipartisan opportunities, Republicans must not compromise our principles. Because if we do not stand up to President Obama, who will?

“I remain optimistic that America’s brightest days are yet to come but we must restore the power back to where it rightly belongs – with the American people.”
