Statement on the President's Announcement that he Will Scale Down United States Military Forces
January 4, 2012
Representative Scott DesJarlais (TN-04) issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s announcement that he will reduce the United States' military forces.
"I am concerned that the military cuts outlined by the President have the potential to make us more vulnerable to our enemies and less supportive of our allies. The President is sending a clear message to those who mean to do us harm, that America’s priority is providing more money for more failed domestic programs rather than making sure our nation’s uniformed military remain the best trained and best equipped fighting force in the world. When I look a mother or father in the eye and know they have sent their son or daughter into harm’s way, I want to do so knowing we have not shortchanged them for a shortsighted focus that puts their loved ones at increased risk. While I remain committed to getting our nation’s financial house in order, the Constitution is very clear on the issue of providing for the common defense of its citizens.”
