Memorial Day

May 27, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC –Representative Scott DesJarlais, M.D (TN-04) released the following statement commemorating Memorial Day:

“Memorial Day is truly a special occasion. Today is the day we honor the brave men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice while in service of this country. The liberties we enjoy today have been forged directly by the efforts of our valiant soldiers. It is because of their sacrifice, we are truly blessed to call our home ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave.'

“Not a day goes by where I am not reminded of the sacrifices made by our service men and women, as well as those of their families. As we are all too aware, freedom does not come without a cost. And that cost has been paid time and time again by those who have fallen in defense of this nation.

“The debt we owe to these individuals is immeasurable. However, it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to ensure that we look after those who have looked out for us. That is why I was proud to introduce the Andrew P. Carpenter Tax Act, which would prevent the IRS from taxing any discharged higher education loans for families of deceased servicemen. Having already sacrificed so much for our country, it is simply wrong to require our military families to pay taxes on forgiven loans.”

“On this Memorial Day, I want to thank all those who have worn the uniform of the United States military. And I offer my prayers for the safety of those who are still serving our country in harm’s way. It is because of their bravery and sense of duty that America continues to be a beacon of hope in an often uncertain world.”

Congressman DesJarlais testified on May 12, 2016 before the House Ways and Means Committee on the Andrew P. Carpenter Tax Act. You can view the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwH2szl2I0E&feature=youtu.be.
