Rep. Scott DesJarlais held firm Monday in his stance that efforts to scale back spending in Washington are not going far enough, voting against a compromise measure that raised the nation's borrowing limit and averted a possible default on the debt. DesJarlais, whose district includes Maury County, joined 65 other Republicans in opposing the bill. DesJarlais said in a statement Monday that while he could not support the legislation, it helped to "fundamentally change the debate in Washington from how much can we spend to how much spending we can cut."
